I am back again and here to stay !!!

Standard

Hey guys,

I am so glade to be back. Whats been up you ask? Well I had two laptops and a desktop die on me. Its hard to keep up with writing and blogging when I haven’t had a personal computer in a year.

But I am back. I plan to focus more on what I am up to as a writer and artist this time.

After taking almost two years to research and learn I am ready to finally finish Helix. I applied the knowledge as I gained it to my prologue and first chapter. The prologue it perfect and I wont be changing it any time soon. Now I can just write it and go back and edit later.

I recently started working on a short story (May become a short novel for teens I think) for a competition. About a week before the deadline, I found out about it late, I realized I could not finish it on time and be happy with the end result. So instead I will just keep writing it, see what it becomes, and then I do plan to sell this one :)

I was also asked to do a CD cover. Cant give that one away. I will post a photo when I am done.

So there it is. I am back and on fire. I will post some of my writing soon, but you can check out my page at Yahoo!Voices, I am a freelance writer.

Absent

Standard

I know lately I have been absent. I never seem to find the time to do all the projects I have in the works. Sometimes something fall to the wayside, left to wait until I have the time to get back to it. I feel bad about not posting for so long.

I have been up to some new endeavors. I started writing for Yahoo!voices. So far I have published two articles, and one is waiting for approval. I don’t get paid a lot, but I’m not doing it to get rich. Why am I doing it, well it gets my name, my voice out there. Here are the links to the two articles I have done.

This is an article I did on David J Rodger, simply a combo of the blog posts I did on my blog: http://voices.yahoo.com/dark-writer-david-j-rodger-11430790.html?cat=44

This is a poem about summer : http://voices.yahoo.com/first-summer-day-11430124.html?cat=47

This is the link to my profile on yahoo!voices, here you can check out articles I have posted and become a fan : http://voices.yahoo.com/first-summer-day-11430124.html?cat=47

My tattoo business has even picked up lately. I am happy about that but it gives me less time with my kids, less time to write or paint.

I will try to post more. It may be sporadic, but when things calm down I would be happy to go back to the artist of the week or month. I hope you are all still with me :)

Coming soon a post on tattoos. I will talk about the history of tattooing and post some photos of my latest works of living art (tattoos).

Fracking Puts Families Out On Street!!!!

Standard

Hydraulic fracturing

For those of you who don’t know what Hydraulic Fracturing is let me explain the dangers this can cause to  our community’s, wildlife, agriculture. I know this isn’t my typical post, but it is a topic I feel strongly about!

This is the short version, Please if you want to know more there is a huge amount of information out there. All you have to do is look! I will add several links at the bottom to get you started.

This is exactly what Wikipedia said.

Hydraulic fracturing is the propagation of fractures in a rock layer caused by the presence of a pressurized fluid. Some hydraulic fractures form naturally, as in the case of veins or dikes, and are a means by which gas and petroleum from source rocks may migrate to reservoir rocks. Induced hydraulic fracturing or hydrofracking, commonly known as fracking, is a technique used to release petroleum, natural gas (including shale gas, tight gas and coal seam gas), or other substances for extraction.[a][1] This type of fracturing creates fractures from a wellbore drilled into reservoir rock formations.

The first use of hydraulic fracturing was in 1947, though the fracking technique which made the shale gas extraction economical was first used in 1997 in the Barnett Shale in Texas.[1][2][3] The energy from the injection of a highly-pressurized fracking fluid creates new channels in the rock which can increase the extraction rates and ultimate recovery of fossil fuels.

Proponents of fracking point to the vast amounts of formerly inaccessible hydrocarbons the process can extract.[4] Detractors point to potential environmental impacts, including contamination of ground water, risks to air quality, the migration of gases and hydraulic fracturing chemicals to the surface, surface contamination from spills and flowback and the health effects of these.[5] For these reasons hydraulic fracturing has come under scrutiny internationally, with some countries suspending or even banning it.

What I have to say :

We as a whole need to take a good look at our surroundings, our communities, our friends, our state, our country.

Our friends and family, our country is struggling. A lot of us can’t  support our families on our own, so we take what we can get. So when a big company comes along waving a large check in their face just to rent or buy the rights to property they take it. They don’t realize that in the long run they are damaging us all. Families being put out on the street with no place to go, how can we alow this. Earth quakes, water on fire, devastation of the eco system, long-term affects we don’t even know come into play. This proses of fracking has been banned in other countries.  I think its time we do the same, before the damage continues.

LIKE this if you are agents fracking, against the destruction of our communities! If I get enough LIKES I will start an online petition to stop fracking entirely!

Damage caused by fracking :

Would you want to drink this water?

Ghost Writing and Editing – Not so Separate!

Standard

I have been freelance writing since 1980. In the beginning of my career, when I was a college student in English, I had a professor who said, “Women make the best editors. They pay more attention to detail than the men do. So it’s best if they edit copy instead of writing it.” I found this to be amusingly sexist, and had a feeling I would end up doing ample writing and editing – I was right.

Over time, in fact, I have found that the two supposedly separate arts, editing and writing, intertwine freely and that you can’t get by without doing both of them in some form or another. Writing usually involves editing, and editing always involves writing or rewriting. I can’t let poorly written copy go, not without adding to it for color’s sake, or subtracting redundancies and clarifying matters.

When I go in to either write or edit, I try hard to maintain the original author’s voice, if it’s a ghost writing project where I’ve been hired to work on someone else’s project – but I throw in a lot of my own savvy when it comes to making things Show not Tell, and making the copy read smoothly and professionally. I can’t stand poorly edited copy, although some of the writers I work with send me exactly that, after they have done the initial ghost writing.

There’s nothing wrong with sending that to me, as I assist with straightening out the copy. I make a great team with one particular ghost writer, being one of her regular editors, and have another one coming on board with me soon in the same capacity. They churn out the rough, ghost written copy, and then I whip it into shape with my editor’s acumen. It’s easy for me and feels good to me, after all these years, to prepare other people’s copy.

I add color, emphasis, tone and flair when appropriate, and rewrite as needed. Sometimes I even content or developmentally edit a piece; but most of what I do tends to be line, grammar and color editing. I like to leave developmental editing to the specialists in that field, who do only content or developmental editing for their livings. But I do enjoy a good, thorough color edit!

That said, as I said, whenever I edit I am also writing for a living. Editing exists to enhance productive writing, and it always requires that I write as I go, adding to and subtracting from someone else’s purple prose, but always enhancing it in order to better serve the purposes of the readers. They are the most important group of people to keep in mind, even when you are ghost writing for someone else; nothing works without an enjoyable reading experience.

The previous post was a sand creature passing on messages in a bottle to snow creature. This is another interesting stop motion animation called Sweet Dreams by Kirsten Lepore again (yes, we like him) where a cup cake travels to vegetable land, builds houses, becomes a muffin, meets a sweet squash potato, becomes a nudist and travels back to his desert land.

A speech worth sharing

Standard

A friend of mine re-posted this on facebook. I felt it was worth sharing, though it has nothing to do with art the message is still worth hearing. I know artist including my self at times feel worthless and unable to create feeling this way. To all artist, you have value, you are precious, you are talented. Never stop believing in your self and your abilities!!!

Very important words. This NEEDED sharing! A well-known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20.00 bill. In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this.” He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it…?” Still the hands were… up in the air. “Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air. “My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20. Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, YOU are still priceless to those who DO LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHO WE ARE. You are special-Don’t EVER forget it.” If you do not pass this on, you may never know the lives it touches, the hurting hearts it speaks to, or the hope that it may bring. Count your blessings, not your problems…Happy New Year ~2012~ May we be INSPIRED & INSPIRE others, Amen! : )

San Clemente Pier Sunset - San Clemente, CA

This was one of those days where you force yourself to go out and take pictures.  I am glad I did because as usual I was pleasantly surprised.  I photographed the pier from dozens of angles from about an hour before sunset to a half hour after sunset.  This extra half hour of twilight  is really the most spectacular time for these types of sky shots.

White Faced Capuchin Monkey - Costa Rica

Roughly 20% of Costa Rica is set aside as national parks.  This is what makes the country so special.  In fact, while I was traveling through Corcovado National Park in Southern Costa Rica I saw all four species (spider, howler, squirrel, and capuchin) of Costa Rican monkeys in one view.  This little guy was pretty feisty and ran around the canopy tracking our every move.
